It’s a busy afternoon – you look at your wrist watch to check for the time. You immediately realize that you only have an hour left before the deadline of your report. You started panicking and began to re-evaluate your moral choices – if only you had started your report sooner, you wouldn’t be in this difficult position.

If you had been in a similar situation as the one mentioned above, do not worry as, like many others, you are developing a habit of procrastination.

Procrastination by definition is delaying or postponing tasks or activities. This commonly happens when you find such tasks not enjoyable nor interesting. Studies also suggest that people who tend to be perfectionist often procrastinate because they are unsure whether they can do a task perfectly.

Fighting Procrastination

  1. Choose Your Tribe
  2. Surrounding yourself with people whom you like to work with is always a pleasant experience. Working with them also boosts your morale so you can surely get the job done – just be sure your teammates are focused on completing the task, and will not compel you to do something else.

  3. Break Down the Task
  4. If you are anxious about doing an extensive task, try to break it down into smaller less complicated tasks. Completing a task, no matter how small, can give you a sense of relief and fulfillment and before you know it you already got the job done.

  5. Do it Now, Reward Yourself Later
  6. The curse of procrastination starts the moment you tell yourself that you still have later to get started. It’s like hitting the snooze button every time your phone’s alarm goes off – you’ll never know that you have overslept for hours until it’s too late. So just do it now, then you can do whatever it is that you find pleasure in doing after you’re done.

  7. Picture the Finish Line
  8. Think about how good it would feel to accomplish something. Just imagine the glorious moment when you actually get the job done.

According to studies, habits can be developed by committing to your goal for 21 days straight. Once you’ve established the habit, you continue to practice it for 90 days – so start now and experience the change within you. 

Overcoming procrastination is an ongoing process that requires self-awareness, discipline, and the implementation of effective strategies. By incorporating these practical tips into your routine, you can build habits that promote productivity and lead to a more fulfilling and successful life. Remember, progress, not perfection, is the goal, and each small step forward brings you closer to conquering procrastination.
